5 ways paper and pen can help your brand thrive in the digital age
Wi-Fi and smart phones have changed our lives dramatically in recent years.
It’s seems pretty much everything you’d like to know is just a Google search away. There’s an app or YouTube video for pretty much anything, and we’re more connected than ever before through social media, text, Skype…
But the digital revolution has its downsides…we’re constantly plugged in.
The first thing most people do when they wake up? Kiss a loved one? Or check their phones just to see what’s ‘happened’ while they’ve been asleep?
The level of noise is deafening if you let it subsume you. So no wonder people are reducing the amount of time they spend on social media or leaving Facebook. Unplugging a little is better for you — physically and mentally.
I read recently that people who surf Facebook reading updates but rarely posting their own are unhappier. Mentally, they’re comparing their life to everyone else’s status updates and posts. Read enough and it doesn’t take long to realise that everyone else has a far better life than you. In your head anyway….
But what’s this got to do with paper and pens?
Also, considering I usually write about my favourite topic of brands. What’s the connection?
Well, despite digital tools becoming ever critical in our personal and business interactions (generally in a good way) I think paper and pen are extremely valuable, and frequently under-used tools in building a brand.
Here are five things you can do to build your brand that are far better with paper and pen.
- Sit with no distractions. Pen poised above a blank sheet of paper and ask yourself how can my brand serve more people even better than it does today?
- Doodle or (if you have the talent) sketch out a new product. A proposal. A better way of working.
- Write a thank you note to a customer or valued employee.
- Use it as an excuse to just stop for a moment and think about what you’re doing and where your brand is going.
- If all else fails. Make a paper aeroplane. I’ve not seen an app or YouTube video yet that can do that!
Block out 30 or 60 minutes from your schedule. Turn everything off. Grab some paper and a pen and take some time out.
When you stop all the other distractions, you’ll surprise yourself with the clarity you gain.
