I’ve lived illegally in the US for 25 years.

Thank you for sharing your story and I apologize for getting a little hot headed on your post. I am a US Citizen because of my dad was a citizen but I was actually born in Brazil and was a permanent resident for most of my young life. When I was in my early teens,we went to Brazil to visit family. We’d already sent in the application for naturalization and my mom hadn’t thought about renewing my green card. When we were coming back from vacation, a nasty customs official yelled at me and told me he would “send me back” to Brazil and I was pretty freaked out but also irritated. I’d spent my entire life in the US and didn’t even speak Portuguese so I didn’t know where exactly he was planning to “send me back”. Obviously it was straightened out and, for no other reason than the fact that my dad was a citizen, I was naturalized right before I turned 18 with no fanfare. I know it’s not quite the same but every time I see stories like this it takes me back to that feeling. Brazil is great and I love my family there but it’s never been my home. I wish you the very best of luck with everything. It doesn’t mean much after this election but you certainly have my support.
