Open letter to Rob Reiner
Your explanation for why Donald Trump is doing well? Because there’s a lot of latent racism in the country that’s just coming to the surface? What kind of intellectually dishonest nonsense is that?
There are plenty of positions Donald Trump takes on issues from economic stimulus, trade and foreign policy to efficiency and anti-bureaucracy that make him appealing. And secondly, there is nothing to suggest that he is racist in any way — quite the contrary, and I challenge you to demonstrate factual evidence to suggest this.
As for just a few of his attractive positions:
Immigration — build a wall, let border patrol do their jobs, make all immigration legal immigration instead of the border sieve “one-world” notion that is currently destroying Europe.
Economy — re-establish appropriate import/export tariffs to truly offset the domestic labor loss which occurs when we pursue free-trade platforms that are not in our best interests economically OR environmentally
Political-correctness — there is a very real sense that free speech is under fire in this country on campuses and across the Internet and at campaign rallies, whether it is BLM protestors or other social justice warriors, and that silent majority that is sick of this entropic anger towards conservative ideals appreciates Trump’s candid, off-the-hip ability to discount that madness. This doesn’t mean that every one of his followers appreciates all the glibness and temperament, but there is a real sense that he has a baseline communication charisma to unite people around good, common-sense ideas.
On the issue of racism, the leftist media has painted a picture that is so out of touch with the truth. From employing a diverse workforce to his many healthy and supportive relationships with people of all races and backgrounds, there is nothing to suggest this. Wanting to enforce our current immigration laws does not make one a racist. Wanting to slow our roll on Syrian refugee immigration does not make one a racist. Those positions have been twisted and manipulated out of context through sensational memes and media-mashups to make him appear like a Hitler-esque despot. And receiving an endorsement from David Duke or any other white supremacist doesn’t mean you’re a racist any more than Tom Brady could be to blame for murders committed by a Patriot’s fan.
You’ve made a career as a film-maker and have given so many of us the wonderful joy in your exploration of many aspects of the human condition. These stories and situations compel us to have a humane discourse on hard topics. Please approach your political commentary with the same authenticity! We don’t need you to summarily demonize all Donald Trump supporters as being racist; the nation needs to cut through the polarizing lies and truly evaluate where our candidates stand on the specific issues of respective nominees’ campaigns. Why don’t you focus your storyteller talents to enhance discourse instead of discord?
