In today’s chaotic world, many of us exist in a state of perpetual thinking. We move through life on autopilot; physically we’re “here”, but mentally we’re stuck dwelling on the past or future. Ironically, our hyper-connectedness has resulted in a state of mass disconnect. We plug in headphones while we’re walking, text on our phones while we’re driving, and read the news while we’re at dinner with our family and friends.

In the words of Belisa Vranich, a psychologist and author of the book Breathe, “Breathing is massively practical. It’s meditation for people who can’t meditate.”

Mindful breathing has long been considered a gateway into the present moment. Here are a few things that sitting still and feeling your breath can help you develop.

  1. Stress Reduction

Mindful control over breathing can alter your mental state, balancing your emotions and decreasing hyperactivity throughout the brain.

2. Increased Alertness

Meaningful breath control provides an opportunity for deep focus, centering the mind and allowing you to fixate and concentrate on tasks.

3. Patience

Taking purposeful time out of your day to relax, close your eyes and breathe, trains our mind to no longer require constant stimulation.

4. Calmness

By reducing constant input into your mind and taking time to solely focus on breathing, you allow all of your thoughts to settle, no longer bouncing across your brain.

5. Awareness

Breath connects much of our body to the mind. Becoming completely aware of our breath allows us to also become purely aware of our feelings and physical being.

6. Creativity

Amazing ideas finally have an opportunity to enter our minds when we are at peace and allow ourselves to become completely unpreoccupied.

7. Complete Presence

Ironically, isolating yourself for just a couple minutes everyday, ultimately allows you to be more present in the world. By truly experiencing our breath, you can completely connect, grounding your body and mind in the moment.

For centuries, Mindful Breathing has been used across the world to train the human mind. This practice will allow you to take control and balance your thoughts with every breath, on your own time.
