This is a refreshing if not obvious piece. Thanks for writing.

I wonder, though, with the significant barriers to entry for owning a physical business like a coffee shop or restaurant (or any business for that matter)…how possible is it really for people to find the funds to start their first shop without making the larger case to investors, banks or even family members that would generate the return on investment necessary to receive the funding in the first place?

As much as you are frustrated with the ridiculous focus on scale, I am frustrated with the apparent need for “toiling” and “suffering” and “bootstrapping” and “paying your dues” and “side hustles on top of full time jobs” that seem to be required in order to start a business without the funding I mentioned above. I recognize this weeds out a lot of people in the process that might be unsuccessful, however it also makes it impossible for many amazing ideas to come to fruition all because we have to make money to eat or support our families or take care of ageing parents…and in this economy we cannot get funding or loans large enough to startup a normal “coffee shop” business (which takes a crazy amount of money).

And without being able to create this basic business from the get go, we are forced to take small steps, like the guy you mention who has a pop up shop. A seemingly great entry point that he is working to SCALE into a basic business.

I very much appreciate your writing and perspective on business. It is a refreshing, overdue view of things. Thanks!
