‘It’s not the dog in the fight, it’s the fight in the dog’ is a quote that often gets shared despite that it’s basically endorsing dog fighting. Underdog and Top Dog also refer to the winning and losing dogs in a fight. Despite the horrific origins of the word, here’s what (business) underdogs can learn from actual dogs.

1. Dogs love to play fetch. Be like them and enjoy pursuing (fetching) new clients.

2. However, chasing the ball (money) is completely captivating and fun until it becomes extremely tiring and feels like you’re going to have a heart attack if you keep chasing it.

3. Marking your territory takes a lot of time and admin. Once you’ve marked it, another dog (competitor) is inevitably going to re-mark it later that day and you’ll have to come back and do it again. Rather aim for a communal workspace or a fenced-off patch of turf where you don’t have to spend so much time urinating.

4. Taking a nap on the floor or under a desk in the middle of the afternoon is completely acceptable.

5. You don’t like them, but sometimes you’ll have to take a (financial) bath.

6. Being on a leash isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Having leash-like parameters and budget constraints to work within can lead to a successful walk and stop you from running into traffic. (Financial suicide.)

7 .You either have to be really good-looking or really ugly to get noticed on social media.

8. Sniffing a new acquaintance’s crotch will either:

a) Happen without incident.

b) Happen with mild excitement.

c) Get you ripped apart.

Side note > Mark Zuckerberg allegedly stole the idea for Facebook after watching dogs ‘social network’ by sniffing each other’s junk in the park. Dog lawyers sued him for intellectual property theft, but dropped the ball on the case and eventually rolled over on the lawsuit after burying the evidence.

9. Just because you have a long face, doesn’t mean that you’re unhappy.
