Right, Boston’s championship odds don’t increase with this trade, but that’s not the point. Boston is still fighting for second place in the East this year either way. If they lose IT this offseason, which is a real possibility, their championship window could be closed until (if) their young guys develop.

With Irving, Boston can bet on Lebron leaving Cleveland next year and the East opening up. Irving+Hayward+Horford/high-ceiling youngsters is as formidable as anybody, and could even challenge the West if Brown and Tatum are the real deal. It’s the perfect timeline for Boston to contend now and in the future.

Plus, they’d still have Rozier as a great 6th man and more than enough talented youth to play bench minutes this year.
