Ah! The beloved evening story time with Dad! Where a child’s memories are vibrant and imagination is unlocked. Dad, are you tired of reading Sam I Am, Hop on Pop, and Dragons Love Tacos? They are classics but are you looking for something more adventurous to read with your children? You are in luck because here are 5 book series that you can begin reading with your children in 2024.

5. The Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart

Mysterious Benedict Society — Amazon

Are you a gifted child looking for special opportunities?

When this peculiar ad appears in the newspaper, dozens of children enroll to take a series of mysterious, mind-bending tests. (And you, dear reader, can test your wits right alongside them.) But in the end just four very special children will succeed. Their challenge: to go on a secret mission that only the most intelligent and resourceful children could complete. With their newfound friendship at stake, will they be able to pass the most important test of all?

Welcome to the Mysterious Benedict Society.

This book has been on my list to read with my children for a while now. Actually, they have already started the series without me. Still, I look forward to reading it with them soon! This series is for grades 3–7. You can find it on Amazon here: Mysterious Benedict Society

4. The Green Ember by S.D. Smith

The Green Ember Series — Amazon

My place beside you, my blood for yours. Till the Green Ember rises, or the end of the world.

Heather and Picket are extraordinary rabbits with ordinary lives until calamitous events overtake them, spilling them into a cauldron of misadventures. They discover that their own story is bound up in the tumult threatening to overwhelm the wider world.

Kings fall and kingdoms totter. Tyrants ascend and terrors threaten. Betrayal beckons, and loyalty is a broken road with peril around every bend.

Where will Heather and Picket land? How will they make their stand?

These books have short chapters and lots of adventure! The children went through them rather quickly. They couldn’t put them down. They aren’t your every day prairie rabbits, these rabbits pack a punch! Great for evening storytime. For grades 5–9 but if you have a 4–5 year old with a sense of adventure they would enjoy these too! You can find it on Amazon here: The Green Ember Series

3. A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket

A Series of Unfortunate Events — Amazon

Dear Reader,

I’m sorry to say that the book you are holding in your hands is extremely unpleasant. It tells an unhappy tale about three very unlucky children. Even though they are charming and clever, the Baudelaire siblings lead lives filled with misery and woe. From the very first page of this book when the children are at the beach and receive terrible news, continuing on through the entire story, disaster lurks at their heels. One might say they are magnets for misfortune.

In this short book alone, the three youngsters encounter a greed and repulsive villian, itchy clothing, a disastrous fire, a plot to steal their fortune, and cold porridge for breakfast.

It is my sad duty to write down these unpleasant tales, but there is nothing stopping you from putting this book down at once and reading something happy, if you prefer that sort of thing.

With all due respect,
Lemony Snicket

This book series is so good! It is right up my alley, the humor is dry, and yet, it is clever. I got hooked when the Netflix series came out but I have enjoyed listening to the audiobooks with my children on our family trips. If you listen to the audiobook, Tim Curry does a wicked Count Olaf and brings out the character in the Audible version. For grades 5–6. You can find it on Amazon here: A Series of Unfortunate Events

2. The Wingfeather Saga by Andrew Peterson

The Wingfeather Saga — Amazon

Adventure. Peril. Lost Jewels. And the fearsome toothy cows of Skree.

Andrew Peterson spins a riveting tale-for-all-ages, following Janner, Tink, and Leeli Igiby, and their trusty dog, Nugget, as they escape from the vicious Fangs of Dang who seek the lost Jewels of Anniera. Quirky characters and their world of wonders — from the edge of the Dark Sea of Darkness to the deadly Glipwood Froest and beyond — set the stage for this epic adventure…

A fantasy with dragons, pirates, and toothy cows?!? This is an adventure that you will all remember for your entire life. Our family just finished this series while we were traveling over the holidays and it really brings out the struggle between good and evil. I know it is number two on the list…is it possible to have two number ones? I really cannot recommend this series enough. You can find it on Amazon here: The Wingfeather Saga

  1. The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien
The Hobbit — Amazon

Bilbo Baggins is a hobbit who enjoys a comfortable, unambitious life, rarely travelling further than the pantry of his hobbit-hole in Bag End. But his contentment is disturbed when the wizard, Gandalf, and a company of thirteen dwarves arrive on his doorstep one day to whisk him away on an unexpected journey ‘there and back again.’ They have a plot to raid the treasure hoard of Smaug the Magnificent, a large and very dangerous dragon . . .

Written for J.R.R. Tolkien’s own children, The Hobbit was published on 21 September 1937. With a beautiful cover design, a handful of black & white drawings and two maps by the author himself, the book became an instant success and was reprinted shortly afterwards with five color plates.

Cliche?!? I don’t think so! Okay, maybe. But I don’t care because this is one of my favorites of all time. You might want to wait until they are slightly older but please don’t deprive your child of growing up with this classic!

If you think it is too much to read, I got you fam! Rob Inglis is one of the best narrators. He even sings the songs! You can find the audiobook on Audible here: The Hobbit — Rob Inglis. Or you can find the book on Amazon here: The Hobbit

I want to read more good books with my children this year. I hope it is a memory you would like to make as well. Whether it is reading together or listening to the audiobook, you’ll always find an adventure with these books!

Enjoy!
