Creating prototype interfaces

For my sprint I decided to make a prototype for an Animal Census citizen science group. I started with a very early paper prototype that had arrows leading to each page.

As you can tell I wanted a very simple app. The app has two main functions. That split apart at the second arrow. The top function is for the users to simply record data about the animals to be sent to the scientists and then receive a ‘Thank you” message. This information includes the animal species, the amount of animals spotted, geo-location photos, and a short textual description. The bottom function give the user community a small amount of feedback to see the relative ranking of animals that other users have reported. The following video goes into slightly more detail very quickly.

My biggest problem was trying to identify what data would be useful and how to interest potential users into providing this data. I think because I had no actual scientist telling me what data they wanted it was unnecessarily difficult. My idea for a more detailed app for users would include a more in depth community that would allow users to connect to each other and hopefully build an animal watching community.

I really liked that I was able to make an interactive app. This was the first time I’ve actually made anything interactive. It gives a great view into what goes into every click we make in our everyday interfaces.

I think user interface and interaction is very important for any type of designs that pertain to safety. For example, construction tools and high speed vehicles can have very serious consequences if the user is unsure or even slightly hesitates with their interactions. If a NASCAR driver can not properly interact with their vehicle lives are endangered as thousands of pounds of metal are hurled at hundred of miles per hour.
