Fire In Your Eyes — A Song About Child Abuse
The mask you wear to face the world doesn’t fool me

We’ve been friends for years now
It’s been fun and I’ve been glad
But I ask myself if I really know you
And why are you so sad
Cause every time I try to touch you
To maybe set you free
And every time I think I’ve reached you
You turn away from me
Yeah, you turn away from me
Chorus:
And I can see the fire in your eyes
Even though you hide yourself so deep inside
And I know that you get hurt so easily
And the mask you wear to face the world doesn’t fool me
Because I can see the fire in your eyes
Yes, I can see the fire in your eyes
Then you bared your soul and told me
How he made your life a hell
How he stole away your innocence
And forced you not to tell
And now and again I see in your face
A frightened little girl
Who blames herself for the wrongness
Of a cruel and ugly world
Oh a cruel and ugly world
Chorus:
And I can see the fire in your eyes
Even though you hide yourself so deep inside
And I know that you get hurt so easily
And the mask you wear to face the world doesn’t fool me
Because I can see the fire in your eyes
Yes, I can see the fire in your eyes
This is a song I wrote about a friend of mine back in the late 90s. Her troubled soul took her to dark places and we somehow lost contact. I still think about her sometimes after all these years and I wish that my then youthful self could have had the wisdom and knowledge to help her more.
