Fleeting Dismal Thoughts After Midnight

Doodle by Author

I was randomly doodling in my sketchbook last night and scribbled over a “self-portrait” drawing that didn't work out how I wanted. But something about the scribbled-out version of the sketch seemed to resonate. Perhaps it evoked the concept of the true self obscured?

Later, I woke from a deep sleep with the sketch still in my mind’s eye. And the above words floating around in my head.

For years, I’ve been…

Australian Outback Travel

If you drive around 55 kilometres northwest of the Australian outback town of Longreach, you’ll get to a rocky hill known locally as “Starlight’s Lookout”.

As hills go, it’s not particularly large or high. But, because the surrounding countryside is so flat and featureless, the little hill dominates the landscape.

We have a bumper crop of cherry tomatoes this year, so, this afternoon, I picked all the ripest ones and cooked up tomato soup.

Throw your tomatoes, a chopped onion, a shallot, some crushed garlic, and some water into a big pot and cook until everything is good and soft. Add some fresh basil from the garden, a pinch of salt, and cook for another minute or so.

PROMPT: Write a haiku or tanka using the prompt word “past” (or a derivative).

I recently started a new job at the Qantas Founders Museum in Longreach, Queensland, Australia.

Working there has made me realize just how important museums are. They offer us tangible connections to past lives and times. They help us to remember the people and events that have shaped our world. And they help preserve the vital knowledge we require for charting our future.

Long live museums of all types, be they large or small!

Air travel is something we all tend to take for granted, nowadays. But, I still get filled with awe when I watch a huge airliner lift off into the sky. Aviation really is a modern miracle!

Right now, I’m quite aviation-focused because I just started a new full-time job at the wonderful Qantas Founders Museum, in Longreach QLD, Australia.

Qantas, one of the world’s top airlines, began life right here in outback Queensland. “Qantas” is an acronym derived from the original name, “Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Services”.
