Chapter 2 Summary
The media today is always changing just like the way people consume the media. People can get the news from almost anywhere at any time of the day. The news can be used on things such as smart phones, mobile apps, and tablet computers. There are always new gadgets and applications being invented in order to make the consumption of the news more efficient and effective. Newspapers and televisions are not going to go extinct by any means, but they will be used less frequently in the future.
There are a variety of audiences that the media has to make sure they appeal. The “Traditionalists,” the “Integrators,” the “Net-newsers” and the “disengaged.” All of these audiences consume the news differently, which means that a news writer needs to be conscious of who their audiences is when creating their story.
The legacy media has struggled in the past simply because the public has grown to not trust everything they see in the media. Because the legacy media has deemed itself untrustworthy at times, the public does not understand the difference between things such as reporter’s opinion and actual found facts.
Because of online news and media, newspaper and television industries have not been as profitable. People are able to get their news faster and at the tips of their fingers rather than waiting for the paper to come out or their local news to come on. Newspaper and television businesses have learned to extend their news also online so people still can choose obtain their content.
This chapter really showed how important it is to learn how to write a story for the web because that is where most people get their news.
