Similar. Political Science/Econ student who had a knack for computers, but never pursued the classical computer science training.
Got an internship, hated repetitive tasks, built macros/scripts/etc to automate portions of the job for myself and other interns that allowed the team to work on other things. Showing ‘chops’ got me into internal website development teams in the company and it spiraled from there. Moved to data science, and application development.
Years later, I’m a successful Sr. Software Developer. I’m not special, I just applied myself and seized some opportunities along the way.
It’s great to hear about the unconventional path others have taken, and believe it gives people the hope and encouragement needed to make the switch they might otherwise be hesitant or discouraged to make.
