On July 5, 1776, the Day After Independence, America Was Free and Great, Right?

The enslavement of thousands of Africans (human beings) was still legal. Anyone asked them how they felt about this? Anyone ask them about freedom and independence? The day after the big party, the parades, the declaration, in writing, nothing changed for most of them. The country was something but it was neither free nor great. Was that possible?

What would the late writer Chinua Achebe say of this drunk paradox? Probably this:

“Until the lions have their own historians, the history of the hunt will always glorify the hunter.”
