With regard to your last point in relation to brand designers being overly precious: many of the leading branding houses such as Wolf Olins and Landor are wide to it. Not sure this is the right analysis but it is AN analysis and that’s what is most important. Bowie’s interview with Jeremy Paxman reveals a man who had a very keen appreciation for the ‘grey space in the middle’ between maker and receiver. Therefore it’s important that when we listen to Bowie we don’t listen out for his narrative but for our own.
