This is the first of (hopefully) many installments of Medium posts (yes, I live in SF) pertaining to one of my favorite things in the world — wine. I’ve reached the stage in life where I’ve realized that “wine” is probably going to be the most sustainable “hobby” that I cultivate in my lifetime.

Tonight we will be discussing this bottle of Broadside Merlot that I purchased from Woodlands Market in SOMA for $14.99. I realize that it’s a Tuesday and I was also conflicted when I put this (and parchment paper, cookie mix, unsalted butter, eggs) in my basket, yet here we are.

Here’s a photo of the wine bottle. Excuse the construction vest — it was just Halloween a few days ago.

When held to a napkin, this wine is a clear deep purple. Held to my nose, I smell a simple fruitiness. Taste — sweet, then slightly acidic. The flavor lasts for about 3 seconds, before leaving my tongue with a coat of slight numbness. I taste the wine over my whole mouth. Not bad overall.

By the way, I have no idea what I’m looking for or how to evaluate a “good” glass of wine. Is there really a “bad” glass of wine?

Anyway, merlot is a deep, red wine made with grapes, cherries, and plums. Apparently merlot pairs well meat (e.g., steak, burgers, lamb, pot roast, etc.) pizza, poultry, aged cheese, roasted/grilled pork, and mushrooms. I picture myself drinking this glass of wine with a nice slice of Costco pepperoni pizza or a herb-crusted grilled pork with a side of asparagus (flashback to a trip to Santorini earlier this year — I’m just saying…).

Well there it is, my first wine post. I’ll end this genre of posts with references to a great meal that I recently ate, and the music that I’m currently listening to.

A great meal: For dinner this past Sunday, I went to Kogi Gogi with some friends. HANDS DOWN the best KBBQ I’ve had in the Bay for as long as I’ve been here (2 years 9 months). Shoutout to Zack and Julian for the soju hookups (they’re regulars).

Music: KIDS mixtape by Mac Miller (RIP), Slow Down by Maverick Sabre and Jorja Smith, Bad News by Leon Bridges, G-Eazy, Sabrina Claudio.

Pour yourself a glass while listening to “Traffic in the Sky” off this tape.
