Well written. I think whatever meaning you ascribe to the universe, about its generosity etc., is based solely on your feelings and interpretation of natural phenomena and so no more valid than other meanings people have chosen, such as the universe really is indifferent. And from a purely materialistic/objective perspective (which I generally find reliable), the latter assumption sounds more pragmatic, less flowery. The universe isn’t brutal or generous, it simply is.

Also, humans are pretty unprecedented, as far as we know, vastly different from other animals, in levels of intelligence at the very least. So comparing their behaviour to that of apes and other ‘natural’ animals may not yield anything more useful than the understanding that humans as a whole are rather unnatural and should maybe be wiped out.
