What a surprise that the first people you pick are democrats.

Hi, John.

You’re right: ideologically speaking, 19th-century Democrats resembled today’s Republicans more than today’s Democrats.

I had to start with Democrats because any discussion of worst presidents must begin with Buchanan. I continued with other 19th-century Democrats because their errors related thematically to Buchanan’s. Similar thematic threads united my discussion of poor Republican presidents.

Nowhere in the essay do I make excuses for Trump or attack liberals.

This is an essay about evidence: By their works ye shall know them. To date, Trump has achieved little. Evidence suggests he has done some harm and not much good, if any. We don’t know what his ultimate legacy will be, but the point of our resistance is to stop Trump from damaging our country and world in ways that would earn him first place in this Hall of Shame.
