1958

Our leaders must keep us in a perpetual state of war — for our own good. Trust me! If we didn’t spend trillions on war, we’d spend it on things like exploring space, even sending people to other planets, eventually sending humans, first a handful, then hundreds, then thousands, beyond our own solar system. This cannot be.

In 1958, the leaders of what was then called the USSR, and the United States of America, each received a “holographic” message from an advanced civilization located outside the solar system. The message contained the image and words of tens of billions of their ‘people.’ The message, however, was nonetheless very clear. They probably won’t kill all of us — provided we stay put.

The moon is the farthest we will ever go.
