How does the dependence of technology influence humanity?
There is no doubt that technology has impacted how people think and operate on a daily basis. If you like it or not, there will always be new technological advancements for as long as we live. These advancements will affect everyone in a different way. It will have a positive impact on some people and a negative impact on others. How has technology impacted humanity as a whole? Is too much technology beneficial or harmful to our society? How has this increase in technology caused people to function in a different way? Has technology influenced children more than adults? These are all questions to consider while determining how technology has impacted society. Dave Eggers novel and sociology will determine the answer to this question.
This picture shows how technology effects people at a very young age. Young children don’t know what life is like without the lastest technological advancements. They would be lost if technology had suddenly vanished. Instead of playing with the toys that are around him, he is fascinated with the television. Children should be interacting with other people not just staring at a T.V. In The Circle, Dave Eggers stated that “The point is that you’re not engaged with the people around you!” (Eggers 188). The child is so focused on technology that he refuses to play with his toys or talk to the other people that are around him. The reason why children shouldn't spend so much time on technology is because it is important for them to make social relationships at a young age. “The human brain is wired to adapt to what the environment around it requires for survival.” (Anderson and Rainie). The child in the picture is adapting that there needs to be technology present in order for life to function. He believes that watching T.V. is more important than playing with his toys and interacting with other children. Most children today are the same way.
In this picture, the user is sitting on the couch and playing on his phone while his dogs are laying on the couch and looking really bored. Technology can distract us from things that we should be doing. For example, instead of playing on his phone, the user should be playing with his pets. There is also a bone just laying on the couch right next to the dogs. The user doesn’t even seem to realize what is going on in his surroundings. His phone is distracting him from giving his dogs the attention that they need. “You know how you finish a bag of chips and you hate yourself? You know you’ve done nothing good for yourself. That’s the same feeling, and you know it is, after some digital binge. You feel wasted and hollow and diminished.” (Eggers). This quote applies directly to this picture. The user is wasting his time by sitting around on his phone instead of playing with his pets. Many people often use cell phones due to instant gratification. (Anderson and Rainie). A lot of individuals wouldn't know what to do with themselves if they didn't have their cell phones for a day. The practice of using cell phones has become so embedded in our daily lives that we need to use them to get rid of stress. This could be what the user is going through.
In this photo, the user is using her laptop but is hiding behind it. This could mean a variety of different things. It could symbolize the fact that she wants to be treated as a completely different person while she is online. It could also portray that she is a very private person and doesn't want anybody to know what she is looking at on the computer. With the new technological advancements that are coming out, things are getting less and less private. Many things that people want to keep private are on the internet for the whole world to see. In The Circle by Dave Eggers, privacy is one of the key compontnets in the novel. The Circle doesn’t believe in privacy. Dave Eggers stated that “ALL THAT HAPPENS MUST BE KNOWN.” (Eggers). The company believes that privacy is theft and that everyone in the world should be transparent. In reality, this could happen in a very short amount of time. With the increasing amount of technological advancements, privacy is something that we take for granted. “Some 95% of teens ages 12–17 are online, 76% use social networking sites, and 77% have cell phones. Moreover, 96% of those ages 18–29 are internet users, 84% use social networking sites, and 97% have cell phones. Well over half of those in that age cohort have smartphones and 23% own tablet computers like iPads.” (Anderson and Rainie). Teens today don’t have that much privacy, and this is why.
Technology has helped us accomplish some great things. It has helped us make advancements in medicine, science and so much more. Technology also helps us with assignments and homework for class. We can complete an assignment really fast through the use of technology. Even though technology can help us with these things, it can hurt us too. In this image the user is clearly working on a paper for school. He only has one line written, and he is already distracted by his phone. Technology can actually prevent us from completing our assignments in class or in the workplace. Most teenagers today get too distracted by social media to finish their assignments in one sitting. These distractions waste time and prevent the person from working to their full capability. In The Circle by Dave Eggers, he said that “His mind seemed barely tethered to his body, much less the earth.” (Eggers). The user is so consumed in his phone that he isn’t even working on his project anymore. It is like his is physically there, but his mind is in a totally different place. Social media is growing at an incredible rate. Many people are turning to social media. (Anderson and Rainie). As you can see, the user in this photo is using social media on his phone. Social media is a complete distraction and should not be used while trying to work.
