I totally understand your issues with promoting yourself on other platforms. As a person who despises and sucks at social media, I’m basically doing the same thing — publishing articles and hoping for crowds but hearing crickets over and over again.
I’m horrible at marketing; it’s just not my thing but it’s required in order to be a good writer, I know that. Last week I launched a Twitter account to promote myself and maybe start a Twitter novel but it was just too difficult for me. It was awkward and overwhelming, and I just felt like I didn’t belong.
I quit after making two Tweets.
Pathetic, right?
Marketing is the key to getting anyone to like what you do. If you’re an architect and you build this beautiful house, nobody’s going to want to live in it if you don’t hire some real estate agent to draw attention for you.
I don’t know; Twitter just wasn’t for me. Maybe I’ll try Tumblr or Word Press… something that doesn’t make cringe and will make me want to stay.
I also get your obsession with that Medium stats page… don’t look at it! I know it’s hard; but you really shouldn’t even think about it until Saturday at the end of week when you get the email saying all your stats. At the beginning at the week your stats are going to be super low and you’ll just be demotivated. If you keep checking every second of every day, those stats are going to move like a snail tied to a boulder.
But you never check until the end of the week you’ll have no idea what your stats are and all the Recommends, views, comments, and followers will just snowball over, making it look like you made more progress than you actually did.
Your piece is excellent, and I hope your writing journeys bring more rewards after the consistent failures! :’)
