We spoke about our demons. We opened up the deepest, darkest parts of ourselves to shed light into these cobwebbed caverns of our psyches. This went beyond sharing skeletons in our closets. For some of us, this was exposing our deepest grief, our most embarrassing scars, the stains that mark us and the wounds we spend our entire lifetime covering up and hiding and running from.","markups":[]},{"name":"7b0d","type":1,"text":"This was a truth-telling moment for many of us. In the process of becoming unnumb, we could no longer run and hide. For me and many others, this was a surrender moment. Surprisingly, this was a cool and pleasant spring night in Austin, TX, and we were able to comfortably wear scarves and jackets for a change. These pictures shown here were taken during our release experience.","markups":[]},{"name":"6efa","type":1,"text":"We gathered around our delicate lantern, coaxing it and encouraging it to lift. Some groups had no problems. Their lanterns took off right away, soaring high over the hills of west Austin. Other lanterns crashed and collapsed on the pavement below and had to be relit. Our lantern wobbled, swayed and drifted up and down several times before finally catching a stream of air and taking off. For many of us, it takes stops and starts and multiple attempts. The practice of trust is a continual do over for most of us. I discovered a truth about myself during the NUMB experience. In my younger days, I was fearless. I was a natural risk-taker and I had a strong faith that everything would work out. I knew that. I trusted this bliss.","markups":[{"type":2,"start":369,"end":373}]},{"name":"4384","type":1,"text":"Now, as I’ve gotten older with a little more wear and tear and I’m more jaded than my youthful, exuberant self, I started listening to the voices that tell me what I should and shouldn’t do. Who I should and shouldn’t be. I started to doubt my decisions more and question my judgement on even the most minor things.","markups":[]},{"name":"257d","type":1,"text":"It’s funny to me that my adulthood didn’t start out this way. While my childhood friends were getting married and starting their families in their early twenties, I was traveling the world. I was climbing mountains and jumping out of planes and sailing on the big and wild Pacific ocean. I was diving into the ocean and going deep on wreck dives and studying other cultures in different countries. I was hiking deep into the forests of the Pacific Northwest, even up into Canada. I encountered wildlife-I mean, BIG and WILD life-that some only read about or, see on the Discovery Channel. I lived limitless!","markups":[]},{"name":"15db","type":1,"text":"Why not now? Why had I settled for a safe and secure life? After several life-tumbles and tough situations, I became afraid to trust. I felt beaten down and scared and the idea of trusting Spirit again was so frightening to me. The sun has set and the stars were out, bright and clear. Eventually, the lanterns appeared as tiny red and pink dots in the sky, blending in with the stars. As time passed, we couldn’t distinguish the lanterns from the stars. People started collecting their purses and keys, preparing to head home. I didn’t want to leave. I wanted to hold on to this blissful experience in release and trust for as long as I could. I wanted to stand out under the stars and disappearing lanterns all night. Slowly, I felt the responsibility of real life tugging at me; knowing I have to get up early for work and I won’t be home until after eleven on a week night and I still need to shower and check the mail and feed the cat and all that.","markups":[]},{"name":"aacc","type":1,"text":"I was one of the last to leave. The organizers started asking the remaining few of us to leave so that they could start cleaning up and the volunteers could go home. As I drove away, following the curvy hillside road, heading north, I felt lighter, a little more hopeful and more confident in trusting Spirit once again.
