Finding Bliss in Creativity: Coloring like a child
We all need creative outlets. We all need some form of creative expression. We may not be consciously aware of this but, new and compelling research is proving this as fact. Our minds, and I venture to bet, our spirits, need the creative space to just let go, relax, center and be calm.
During my college years, I explored art therapy and would have chosen this as a career if I had any confidence this path would pay the bills. In the end, I chose to listen to my passion and study dance and begin my adult life as a dance teacher. Little did I know, this career choice didn’t really pay the bills either. Yet, I loved exploring movement studies and learning how dance and movement therapy brings joy and healing into our lives. Have you ever seen a four year old dance? It’s pure bliss! Simple, joyful and blissfully beautiful.(See more on how I find bliss through movement from my post on April 19,2015, http://bringblissback.blogspot.com/2015/04/movement-meditation-is-my-bliss.html)
Outlets for discovery, joy, creativity and bliss help us to lower stress in our lives and handle anxious situations better. We become better at problem solving and our attitude towards daily challenges improves. None of us are immune to the ups and downs of life and there’s really no way to avoid the difficulties. (Those of you who love roller coaster rides may have a leg up on the rest of us, I believe. Come back to read a future post on how thrill seekers live more boldly and find bliss in their lives.) We can give ourselves a little edge in tackling life’s hurdles by allowing ourselves opportunities to seek and find a little dose of bliss. Creative practice helps us increase delight and decrease despair. Who wants to be more delightful?
Take an art class. Pick up the paint brush! Get out that sewing pattern you have stored in the back of your closet and make it! Take a cooking class and learn to make something new and delicious and amazing. Write a poem to your spousemouse and no matter how bad you think it is, share it anyway! Take a dance class. Better yet, sign up for a series of dance classes. #supportdanceteacherseverywhere
