Hydroponics is fast becoming a popular way of growing vegetables and other plants and many home gardeners are giving it a try. Purchasing a ready-made hydroponics system can sometimes be very expensive and most people do not know that they can build a Homemade Hydroponics System rather easily and without all the expense.

Hydroponics is the growing of plants with no soil. The roots grow in a medium that is not soil, or in a liquid that consists of nutrients and water. It is much cleaner and you can grow plants all year round using this method. Making your own system will save you money and then you will also save money on the amount of money you spend at the grocery store since you will be growing your tomatoes, lettuce and other vegetables even in the dead of winter.

A very simple method of making a hydroponic system is called the Wick Method. In this method, nutrient water is absorbed by nylon roping into the medium in which the plants are planted in. Only a few supplies are needed and they are relatively inexpensive.

To make the wick system you need one dark colored storage tub. The reason it is dark is to discourage the growth of algae in the nutrient solution. You need another storage tub of the same size in which you are going to put the pots with your plants (this one needs to fit inside the dark colored one. This can be any color or the same as the other tub. You need several yards of one half inch nylon rope. You need an air pump like the kind that are in aquariums to keep the nutrient solutions full of oxygen. Also needed are pots for your plants that are filled with a hydroponic planting medium. Clay pebbles work well or you can use a fifty fifty combination of perlite and vermiculite. Grow lights are also a necessity because you can’t grow plants that give fruit indoors without a stronger source of sunlight.

Place a length of nylon rope through the drain hole in each container before planting. Fill the pot with the planting medium and make sure the nylon rope comes up into the pot and near where the roots of the plant will be. It must hang out of the plant long enough to be immersed in the nutrient solution. Plant your vegetables or other plants in the planting medium. In the tub you are going to put the plants in you will need to drill half-inch holes under where the containers will sit. Put the plants in and string the rope through the holes so that it hangs down a considerable distance. Place the air pump into the tub that holds the nutrient solution. Place the top tub in the bottom.

There is a little maintenance to this system as you have to make sure there is enough nutrient solution in it at all times. You should check every week or twice a week depending on the plants. Grow tomatoes, lettuce, and other vegetables and keep that grocery bill down.
