The lack of treatment beds is really awful. As I stated in the piece, the Gloucester PD has to send people out of state. And, as they plan to expand this program nationwide, there is going to be a point where the demand for beds exceeds supply in every state, like it already does in MA. And the Governor’s new bill? Doesn’t have any provisions for money for new treatment beds. Boston Mayor Marty Walsh, who ran on a platform of substance abuse reform and is in recovery himself? Closed over 100 treatment beds in his first year as mayor (2/3 of the women’s beds in the city) and has yet to replace any of them. How does anyone have a hope at getting well if they can’t even get a bed?
