Productivity is such a buzzword these days. We all strive for it, dreaming about being able to squeeze more quality hours into the day.

Why Is Productivity a Good Idea in the First Place?

If you’re productive with the time you have, it allows you to relax with a clear conscience at the end of the day. And when you truly rest, you build up strength to be even more productive when you start working again. Productivity helps you break out of the vicious cycle of working and not achieving anything.

Why Not Eat the Frog?

The popular idea of “eating the frog” (aka tackling your most difficult task first) is a great one, but I’ve found a better way.

Try This Instead

I used to be a fiction writer in the mornings. But when I realized how important it was for me to write emails to my list every day, I switched to doing that first. Unfortunately, my writing progress was slow and it took me longer to write emails in the morning than later in the day.

If you’re wondering what to do, here’s what I’ve found works: do the task that feels right for you in that moment. If you’re a morning person and bright awake early, then tackle the tasks that are the most brain-demanding. But if you need a bit of coffee to get going, do something nice and easy that you’ve done many times before.

Making this change has been a great experience for me. I now get more done throughout the day, and I’m able to relax faster. Give it a try and see if it works for you too!
