Why do some people succeed almost at once while others struggle for years with nothing to show for it?

What makes you get up in the morning, jumping out of bed, ready to start your awesome day? Honestly, that question has always puzzled me. Because after I quit my job in 1995, I just loved to get out of bed.
And now I’ve finally, thanks to a video, figured out why.
Why did I jump out of bed when others dragged their feet? How come I’m still job-free after 28 years while others aren’t able to quit their job? After all…
We have the same opportunities, right?
Yes, but the Difference Lies in the Mindset
Success or failure…
It has nothing to do with thinking positive thoughts. Or visualizing at least once a day. Or meditating over a glass of water.
Nothing.
It’s a question of brain chemistry. And let’s just get this over with. I know next to nothing about neuroscience.
And I had to pay deep attention for more than 12 minutes.
(Thus beating my own record with 10+ minutes.) Then I got it. Woah! It’s so simple.
It’s So Easy to Quit
Have you ever started something…
And then after a week, you went, “Nah, this isn’t for me”? Welcome to the club. The sad thing is that what you made an early judgement about COULD actually have been the activity that would make you rich.
Or at least be a profitable side hustle.
Why Do Some People Quit While Others Don’t Give Up?
I often think of Jeff Bezos.
We’re not talking whether to like him or not. I have no opinion about the man. But there’s one thing I admire him for.
Not quitting.
How long would you have continued building an online business when it made a huge loss year after year? Me? Probably six months.
Max.
Jeff Bezos? From 1995 to 2003. Eight years. And even then, the profit was low.
Have you ever thought about what made him different from most of us?
I have. And it may be as simple as how he gets rewarded for his work. What made Jeff Bezos get up in the morning?
What Rewards You?
Years ago, I read about an experiment made with kids.
Many of those are interesting, by the way. We can learn a lot about how kids think and how we think. Today, I got reminded of one of those experiments.
Kids love to draw, right?
But what happens if you reward them for drawing? Now they are getting a gold star for something they love to do. That’s great, right?
Nope.
It’s bad. It’s something I’ve always wondered about. If parents or school teachers rewards everything a kid likes to do, where’s the motivation to do better?
It turns out that it’s not just about doing better.
It’s about doing at all.
When those kids, who loved to draw, were rewarded, and the rewards stopped coming… they stopped drawing. They no longer got pleasure from it.
They had moved the pleasure of drawing from the inside to the outside reward.
That’s how simple it is. That made them quit doing something they originally loved. And that’s what makes you quit, too.
Move the Reward to Your Inside
Intrinsic rewards, is the technical term.
Those are internal rewards. A good feeling that comes from within yourself and not from some external source. This is also why money is not a motivational factor.
You can get high on making money.
For sure. It’s like a drug. But just like every drug…
You need more and more all the time to keep you high. Find that reward inside yourself and you are headed directly towards success. Get up in the morning because you love your life and your work.
Not for any other reason.
(Okay, a dog scratching you may be a good enough reason to get up.)
Although money shouldn’t motivate you, we still need it.
