The next A24 film I watched was The Last Black Man in San Francisco (2019). Still as visually stunning as I remember, this movie follows childhood friends Jimmie Fails and Montgomery Allen as they try to reclaim the house Jimmie’s grandfather built from a gentrifying white couple. While both men give great performances, Jonathan Majors’ Mont truly is the standout—he so effectively embodies the unexpectedly multi-talented playwright. (I’ve never seen Jonathan on screen before, although he’s currently starring in Lovecraft Country on HBO.) This movie blends beautiful shots of the city and the bay with an emotional soundtrack that will give you goosebumps and bring you to tears. Bless. Bonus shots for locals who like seeing their world reflected on screen.
