At the time, my father could make me feel a thousand times worse by saying, “I’m really disappointed,” than my mother could by raging and crying and making empty threats. But in her quiet, honest moments, my mother could make me feel truly despised. I don’t know if it’s a verifiable trend, but it was certainly my experience!
