Former UFC heavy-weight Stefan Struve retired from mixed-martial-arts, due to a heart problem. He shares the same health issue like great danes for their size, in heart failure.

After winning his 29th profesional fight by arm triangle submission at UFC Prague, the 31-year-old announced he would most likely retire after the win. Struve wanted to retire on top, as most fighters don’t as they stick around longer than they should. The following days the Dutchman confirmed his retirement on the Ariel Helwani MMA-Show. In 2013, the UFC veteran was diagnosed with a leaking aortic valve and a large heart, causing heart failure. Struve in his retirement speech said he knew he only had a few years left to fight and he stayed a little longer than his planned retirement.

The seven-footer has notable wins over Antonio Rodrigo Nogueria, Patty Barry, and former heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic. Struve was unable to capture the heavyweight title, but he says he has no regrets and is proud of his long career.

Struve will still continue to train even after retirement, as it bring him enjoyment and plans to teach someday. However, MMA fighters retirements usually don’t last long. The 31-year-old can still comeback and compete in the future, as heavyweights still compete in their 40’s.
