Today I spent almost all the day talking to people and it was very interesting to see the different dynamic which happens when different people approach me (or I approach them).

One of the most significant and easily spotted things is silence — some people just can’t stand silence and they try to fill it with any appropriate small-talk. I remember that I used to be very uncomfortable with silence as I believed that other people might think I am not interested in them and in their story.

I remember it took me a great amount of mental strain to teach myself to not jump to a topic just to keep the dreaded silence at bay. And a very funny thing occurred — letting the silence slip in to a conversation completely alters my behavior. Instead of stressing that I might not be interested in the person or their story, I allow myself to better understand what was told and respond with a much better answer / follow up question.
