Every kid is basically being judged if s/he has a lot of friends. Then — in teen-age years — the the amount of the friends starts to decrease and you actually end up with the friends who you like and who like you. So with time passing by you lose friends or ‘filter them out’ so only the ones you want in your life remain.

At least that’s the way I see it — it’s still possible to find good friends later in life but the friends that you made earlier in life are more likely to actually stay friends.

For me the friends are people who you don’t see for a very long time and when you meet you still have things to talk about and are sincerely interested in each other — that’s the sign of true friendship.
