I also reject the notion (espoused in an earlier response) that one must be in a union to have a chance at a middle-class life. Being in a union simply substitutes two masters for one. I guess that seems like a bargain to some people. Freedom, I think, requires that the number of external masters be precisely zero. Freedom requires the maintenance of personal responsibility, not the abdication thereof.
