And that’s not the only reason to follow this race.

We all know the story of the recent rise in progressive candidates: rewind to November 8, 2016. Fast forward through the last year and a half with the rise of racism, sexism, and a whole lot of activism. And here we are, in Twitter has deemed the #BlueWave2018.

Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick has spent the last decade lobbying at Capitol Hill to drive positive change in Health Care Reform. As the innovative CEO of a company that provides home-based continued medical care; teaches families how to care for their loved ones; and provides vocational training in the medical field, Sheila has seen first-hand the hardship our families are experiencing without access to affordable care. And she’s proud of the work her company has done to alleviate the issue.

Cherfilus-McCormick was activated to lead after Trump slammed immigration and called her family’s home country, Haiti, “a sh**hole.”

Sheila’s mother moved to the U.S. at the young age of sixteen and worked as a maid at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel to put herself through college. Her father immigrated after completing medical school.

We need more visibility of first generation Americans in eyesight of this President in order to ensure we are building bridges instead of building walls. But we also need more health care experts, more mothers who’ve had to raise a child alone, more mothers who know disabilities, and really… just more compassion,” she says.

Sheila is all of these. And she’s ready to ensure all Floridians have the upward mobility to pursue their American Dream.

Throughout my journey, I have realized that there are many ways to attain the American Dream and each journey is uniquely beautiful. I fought long and hard to evolve into the person God created me to be. I won’t stop fighting until everyone has that opportunity. My vision for this country will not be realized until all the glass ceilings are shattered.”

Cherfilus-McCormick is running against incumbent, Rep. Alcee Hastings, who has been impeached from public office for bribery and recently settled a sexual harassment case.
