The Rundown

In easily one of the most refreshing takes on the horror genre in years, A24 Studios gives us a two for one special with the release of X and Pearl (2022), the latter being a prequel to one of most impressive performances given by Mia Goth, who steals the limelight in her role as the leading lady Maxine. The film lands us with Maxine and her filmmaker friends on the road in hopes of finding the perfect set for the adult movie they believe will take their careers to the next level. However, as the film is set in 1979 both the characters and audience come to find rural American finds sexual films to be that of the devils work, considering consensual adult films as illegal smut. So Maxine and her colleagues settle for shooting in an empty barn across the field from an elderly couples farm, whom of which one shows a disturbing interest in Maxine’s lifestyle. That elderly woman being, Pearl.

Why Should You Watch It?

With the over-saturation of the horror genre, it’s hard to make a name for yourself. But X and it’s prequel counterpart Pearl stand out amongst them all, whether it’s the perfect ratio of comfortable moments and nostalgic slasher tropes or M. Goth just absolutely nailing her role, X is one of the most lively and thrilling horror films out there. I strongly encourage the very small percentage of people who will stumble across X and not Pearl that watching them both is an absolute treat. By releasing both in such a close proximity, there’s easter eggs and sub-plots to rediscover after you finish both of the films for the first time. Not to mention M. Goth can guide you through the narrative as she stars in both films, including as a young and once full hope Pearl. Multi-dimensional, charismatic and a little bit sexy at times, something that I think we’ve missed from modern horror.

Wrap Up

You know you’ve done something right when your films main character has been locked in as a halloween costume classic. Within weeks brows were bleached, 70’s eyeshadow and braless overalls were taking over the streets of halloween. A24 Studios is effortlessly producing hit films with unique plots that will leave you with more than before you clicked play. An incredibly fun watch in a group for those who aren’t fussed about some lighthearted sexual deviance and a brilliantly uncomfortable film for anyone looking to expand their expectations of the horror genre without regret. Both films have found their titles as modern horror cult-classics.
