Horns beat ULW 80–59

It wasn’t all easy, but the team took some big steps in the maturation process over this 40 minutes. The warhawks hung around keeping it close to tied well into the first half, but eventually the longhorns put together a big 11–0 run in the 2nd half to put the game out of reach.

Having Mack and Roach back from suspension helped greatly with the offensive flow. Mack dropped 4 treys and Roach led multiple breaks contributing to the team’s 18 fast break points ( 5 more than against Incarnate Word last week ). The minutes for Mack and Roach ended up mostly coming from Yancy and Young who both played well last week, but got roughly 10 less minutes this week.

Jarrett Allen had a spin move dunk that will likely make an appearance in his draft prospect scouting video next year. He followed that dunk with a somewhat heat-check 3 pointer at the top of the key that could have brought the house down had it dropped. Overall, stat-wise it was a fairly quiet night for him offensively, but he looked good, the ball just wasn’t being forced his way very much.

He also displayed some quality defense, defending both down low and out on the perimeter. Here he is intercepting a pass then quickly dropping an outlet dime to get an easy 2 points.

Here he is again, earlier in the half showing just some quality non-flashy post moves. Getting the defender just slightly off of his feet with a fake and then moving on by.

Having Mack back was much needed as Shaka’s offense thrives on shooters. Mack was 4 of 6 from 3, while the rest of the team was only 3 for 16. Mack needs to keep that kind of shooting up & we really need at least one other player to be shooting consistently. Here he is helping put the game away in the 2nd half.

Props to ULM for an entertaining game. They were absolutely launching 3s the entire time ( over 50% of their attempts were 3s ). But they ended up shooting less than 24% from behind the arc. If more of those had fallen it could have been quite competitive.

This was game 1 of the legends classic, which will run through next week and finish up for the horns in Brooklyn where they will face an early season test against Colorado or Notre Dame, both of which are top-50 Pomeroy teams as of now.
