What’s surprising to me is that the focus of hatred seems to have morphed now from immigrants, Jews, and Catholics to transgender people.

You have it partially right, that they’re terrified of ‘Others’, but there’s also much the same impulse driving the Religious Right’s fixation on abortion.

Publically, the Religious Right’s casus belli was Roe v. Wade. Privately, it was the forced integration of Bob Jones University, upon pain of losing federal funds.

However in the mid ’70s coming out with an explicitly racist rallying cry would have failed, so they opted for a ‘softer’ target.

You’re the ‘softer’ target now; more or less. It’s more socially acceptable to rail againt you as the enemy of good people. That they have to explicitly target transgender people is, in a way, a sign of progress. They’re not ignoring you now.

It’s just that they just can’t quit their racist and antisemitic jones all that easily as demonstrated by the Khaki-Tiki Bund in Charlottesville, because the true and only animating principle of the Klan (and their Neo-Nazi confederates) is the perpetuation of White Christian-for-certain-values-of-Christian Male Supremacy.
