The Forbes Website Has Become A Joke
One of the more trustable websites for financial news and opinions is/was Forbes. But the site has slowly turned into nothing more than a platform of advertisements and is now very frustrating to try to read.
For every article crammed into the middle of the page we now have a column on the left with an auto-play video and then an endless list below it with other articles. On the right column we have ads that scroll down with you as you scroll down. On the top of the page we have another ad that sometimes expands and blocks the article and it scrolls down with you as well. Inside the articles are more ads between certain paragraphs and at the end of the articles there is guess what? Another advertisement.
The actual articles, beside being sometimes hard to find on the page and definitely hard to follow with all the extracurricular activity going on all around it, are often a minor part of your laptop screen.
All in all, the publication has become a joke. Its like an elementary school student is now in charge over there and has no idea how what they are doing.
Being an advertising major myself, I have always subscribed to the belief that moderation in advertising is the best path. The last thing you want to do is to piss off your readers or viewers and make them want to leave. The right balance is always quality content combined with a bit of advertising that is targeted toward the reader/viewer. This give them something else to click on if interested but doesn’t leave them feeling like you are making them work just to see the stuff they really came for.
The Forbes website is so over-the-top with ads that I’m starting to click on their stories less and less when I realize the link I’m clicking leads to them. I want to read what some of those articles have to say but, for crying out loud, enough is enough. I’ll bet Philip Elmer-Dewitt is happy he quit Forbes and moved to his own site because now he can control how his content looks and what is around it.
