They exist. In fact, I consider myself one of them, and for the right team opportunity and challenge I am also willing to negotiate bullet #4 (within reason, obviously) — but time and time again I find myself in the final rounds of interviews where it’s down to me, and another candidate and the roles usually end up going to a more junior person with a totally unrelated-to-marketing-degree from Stanford/Harvard. I think CEOs need to also look past the fancy pedigree, and focus on what type of talent is going to enable them to scale quickly and strategically for the long haul.
