I think this is good. The only suggestion I would make is I think when you took it a step further by allowing the user to move the cursor up and select one of the icons is perhaps too much. I think a simpler method would be to just have the icon appear on hover but with no interactivity — instead when you press a modifier key on the keyboard (cmd for instance) the icon changes. This way you’ve got the visual queue, the control and it keeps things simple.
