Charlotte’s Community Letter

At our July 28 club breakfast meeting, fellow Rotarian Bernice Mar discussed with us Charlotte City Council’s Community Letter, which was written in response to last year’s demonstrations and unrest.

The City Council seeks community engagement on the following three issues:

1. Trust in community policing: Charlotte is committed to strengthening relationships and trust between our residents and law enforcement so the community is protected and public safety is maintained across the city.

2. Quality, affordable housing: Open access to sale, quality and affordable housing is critical to our community’s success.

3. Good paying jobs: As an economic leader in our state, nationally and internationally, Charlotte is committed to enhancing economic opportunity for everyone.

The letter can be found in its entirety at charlottenc.gov/communityletter

Fellow Rotarian Bernice Mar

Bernice discussed these three focus areas, and passed out surveys to our members at the meeting. These surveys asked two simple questions:

Which of these three focus areas is most important to you?

What should the city government do to achieve these goals, in your own words?

In the discussion that followed, many of our club members commented that a focus on good paying jobs should be the priority. If good paying jobs are available to all, then the resources to tackle all other problems is there.

Specifically, several members voiced a preference to improve education and schools. More than one member cited the need for expanded #STEAM programs and vocational education in our schools. These programs would create more long-term opportunity for our community, in our opinion.

Bernice collected our surveys and will submit them to the City Council by August 11. Thank you Bernice!
