That vegan was wrong. The tweet said the victims have changed, but the victims have not changed. Have you heard of the Black Lives Matter movement? Do you know why it exists? It exists because the victims are the same. Black people are still subjected to unjust violence disproportionately. To suggest that black people have it great in America and it’s only the pigs who die anymore is just ignorant.

I’m saying this as a vegan.

Beyond this, it is also racist to liken a black person to an animal for the sake of creating an analogy. This is wholly unnecessary for purposes of demonstrating the immorality of industrialized meat production. Vegan propaganda exists within cultural contexts and, even if we live in a speciesist world, we also live in a racist world, and it is possible for a piece of propaganda to be both racist and anti-speciesist, which this was. In other words, speciesism exists within an intersectional framework, and, if your anti-speciesist rhetoric is not also intersectional, it fails, just like racist feminism or misogynistic racial empowerment.
