Unveiling Nigeria’s Cultural Treasures through Open Culture GLAM Tour
In a remarkable step towards building a community of open culture for sustainable open licensing practices in Nigeria, the Open Culture Nigeria project team embarked on a journey to explore the artistic, cultural and educational collections at some GLAM institutions in Nigeria such as Tunde Odunlade Arts and Culture Connexions Ibadan, Kwara State Library Board, Ghalib Chamber Law Library Ilorin, Mustapha Akanbi Library and Resource Center Ilorin, State Central E-Library Awka, and the Arewa House Library and Museum in Kaduna as part of the partnership and collaboration efforts established.
The purpose of visiting and capturing images of works in these institutions was twofold.
- Firstly, this endeavour aimed to enhance the online visibility and accessibility of cultural heritage materials and library collections. By documenting these treasures through photography and utilizing the open licenses provided by Creative Commons, the project sought to establish an open digital repository on Wikimedia Commons. This repository can be shared globally, overcoming the physical barriers and limited foot traffic that often restrict access to such collections. This digitization effort aligns with the broader goal of promoting open access and open licensing practices.
- Secondly, visiting and photographing these works fostered a tangible connection between the project team and the cultural artefacts. This process captured the essence of the encounter and the cultural exchange that occurred during the visit. By visually showcasing captivating art collections and artefacts, the project not only drew attention to individual works but also emphasized the collaborative and sharing spirit fundamental to sustainable open licensing practices. This documentation serves as a testament to the journey undertaken, the individuals encountered, and the dedication to cultivating an open culture community in Nigeria.
HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE GLAM INSTITUTION VISITS
Tunde Odunlade Arts and Culture Connexions: A Tapestry of Nigerian Artistry
On August 11th, 2023, our team was enraptured by the cultural panorama of the Tunde Odunlade Arts and Culture Connexions, nestled in the bustling city of Ibadan. This iconic gallery, a creation of Prince Tunde Odunlade — an acclaimed Nigerian artist, actor, and musician — is more than just an art space; it’s a canvas narrating Nigeria’s rich artistic legacy.
The establishment is not simply an art gallery but an embodiment of Nigeria’s creative spirit. Home to a myriad of art forms, it displays Batik art tapestries, beguiling floatography designs, mesmerizing oil and abstract paintings, intricate beadworks, and masterful wood art, among others. Each piece narrates a story, echoing tales of Nigeria’s deep-rooted traditions, modern evolutions, and vibrant future.
Yet, what sets the gallery apart is its mission. It transcends beyond being a mere visual gallery — it’s a nexus for cultural exploration and exchange. Through its curated pieces and the visionary endeavours of Prince Tunde Odunlade, it presents a mosaic of Nigeria’s artistic milieu, making it an unparalleled cultural touchstone in Ibadan and Nigeria at large.
Our time there wasn’t just a passive observation. We had the honour of engaging with the maestro, Prince Tunde Odunlade, who shared the essence and inspirations behind his work. This interaction, enshrined by photographs of the gallery’s eclectic art collections, was a moment of pure cultural osmosis.

Arewa House Library and Museum Visit, Kaduna
On August 14th, 2023, our journey led us to the historical heart of Kaduna, where we were introduced to the legacy of the late Sardauna of Sokoto, Sir Ahmadu Bello, and the deep-seated history of Northern Nigeria. The Arewa House, officially referred to as Gidan Arewa in Hausa, is not just a monument; it’s an embodiment of Nigeria’s rich northern history.
Rooted on №1 Rabah Road, this revered institution stands on the residence of the late Premier of Northern Nigeria. Established in 1970 under the leadership of the pioneering Professor Abdullahi Smith, it serves as a vital research and documentation centre affiliated with the esteemed Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. This house of knowledge bears the mission of illuminating the history, culture, policies, peace, and leadership narratives of Northern Nigeria.
Yet, its distinction doesn’t solely lie in its age-old foundations. Governed by an independent Board of Trustees and the vigilant eyes of its current Director, Dr. Shuaibu Shehu Aliyu, the Arewa House has carved its own niche as a powerhouse for both historical appreciation and contemporary studies.
Key Attractions and Features of the Arewa House Library and Museum
A tapestry of narratives awaits every visitor at the Arewa House. As a research hub, it boasts a magnificent collection of Arabic manuscripts, government publications, newspaper archives, and personal donations, making it an indispensable reservoir for those delving into Northern Nigeria’s history. From dissertations across humanities and social sciences to invaluable records from the Premier’s office, every paper, every book, and every manuscript echoes tales from yesteryears.
Its Museum, adorned with nineteen satellite galleries, offers a visual voyage through the lives, cultures, and traditions of the northern tribes. Each gallery is a testament to the colourful and diverse heritage of the region, offering visitors a chance to step back in time and relive moments that have shaped Nigeria.
Moreover, the Arewa House is not just a sanctuary for scholars. With its affordable accommodations, conference hall, training rooms, bookshop, and restaurant, it ensures that every guest, researcher or not, is treated to a blend of knowledge, comfort, and cultural immersion.
But perhaps, the real jewel of the Arewa House lies in its commitment to promoting research. Whether it’s the post-graduate studies facilitated in collaboration with other institutions or the publishing endeavours that see the light in the form of books and journals, the Arewa House ensures that the knowledge it houses continues to inspire, inform, and intrigue.

Ghalib Chamber Law Library: A Legal Sanctuary in Ilorin
On the 3rd of August, we were privileged to explore the Ghalib Chamber Law Library, a distinguished institution nestled in Ilorin. Founded and owned by Yusuf Olaolu Ali, an esteemed Senior Advocate of Nigeria, this library stands as an integral part of the renowned Ghalib Chambers — a collective of adept legal practitioners navigating the vast terrains of corporate, commercial, and financial law in Nigeria.
Incepted on the 2nd of June, 1994, the Ghalib Chamber Law Library’s original mandate was to serve the research and information requisites of the chamber’s lawyers exclusively. Yet, as time unfurled, the library’s vision evolved, extending its rich reservoir of resources to cater to the broader public, enveloping legal aficionados both within Kwara State and the nation’s capital, Abuja. It stands testament to its commitment through its regular subscriptions to pivotal law reports including the Nigerian Weekly Law Reports (NWLR) and Supreme Court Monthly (SCM), among others.
Stepping inside, one is met with an expanse echoing thoughtfulness in design. The library sprawls spaciously, adorned with state-of-the-art library furniture and shelves. It boasts an impressive anthology of over 11,000 legal and non-legal volumes sourced from prestigious publishers: Oxford University Press, LexisNexis London, JURISNET, Renaissance Law Publishers, Lagos Nigeria, Tymobed International Services, Aba Abia State, and Kluwer Law International, to name a few.

Our Open Culture journey of exploration led us to the magnificent Kwara State Library Board, a three-storey building complex that houses the nexus of knowledge and culture deeply rooted in the heart of Kwara State, Nigeria. Established as a beacon of enlightenment shortly after the state’s creation in 1967 and rejuvenated in 2005, this library which is referred to as the “people’s university” epitomizes the state’s unwavering commitment to fostering a culture of education and information.
From its genesis in response to the limitations of the former Kaduna State Library, the Kwara State Library Board has grown to become a monumental institution, with its headquarters in Ilorin and branch libraries in Jebba and Offa, thereby ensuring the state’s residents have widespread access to knowledge.
Key Attractions and Features
As we stepped into the library, we were instantly enveloped in an atmosphere of intellectual grandeur. The space is meticulously segmented into specialized departments, each reflecting a distinct realm of knowledge.
- Science and Technology Department: This section brims with books and journals chronicling advancements, discoveries, and methodologies from the ever-evolving world of science and technology.
- Humanities Department: A sanctuary for those keen on delving deep into the realms of art, culture, philosophy, and the human experience.

Established on November 17th, 2016, this private-public library is particularly renowned for its extensive law collections, but it offers so much more. Within its walls lie myriad resources that have the potential to enrich minds and catalyze positive societal change.

- A Rich Tapestry of Collections: The library boasts over 10,000 diverse collections. Noteworthy among these are the Sahim Muslim and Masalam Islamic Collections, providing deep insights into Islamic knowledge and thought.
- Tribute to a Legal Luminary: The library pays homage to the late Justice Mustapha Akanbi, preserving a diverse range of his archival materials and albums. This dedicated section allows patrons to journey through his illustrious legal career, insights, and contributions.
