Tonight’s Episode of Suits

Finally, Suits got its shit together. It’s bringing us a compelling story without creating a painfully obvious big bad to root against. Which isn’t to say there aren’t antagonists, they’re just not strong ones. Sean Cahill is on Mike’s side and so is Frank now that Harvey is representing him. Kevin can’t rightly be considered on Mike’s side, but he also can’t be considered an antagonist since he’s just there to be manipulated and used. Sutter’s definitely not a good guy, but he’s not actively opposing any of the people we’re rooting for.

If anything the antagonist is the US Judicial System itself. The show’s creators make it clear that Mike’s “fraud” was a crime only legally, and morally he did nothing wrong. This makes the convoluted scheme to get him out all the more hateable. We, as viewers, know the fragile bubble needed to keep the scheme going will inevitably burst spectacularly. Until then, the lies become more extreme, and watching each episode makes you feel dirty as a viewer. You alone know the truth behind all the lies the characters tell one another.

I’ve always watched Suits with passive interest, but now I’m really excited about where this season might go, with Harvey battling Cahill (but not really). Mike trying to make friends with Kevin (but not really), and Rachel trying to free a death row inmate (really).
