Ingredients: Chunks of turkey and salt

Beth got the text. Her younger sister was coming to pick up the dog food before she rushed back down to Florida after Christmas break. She was trying to beat the incoming winter storm.

Even though she hated dogs, she watched this one as it used to be hers. She “won” it from the divorce only because her ex-husband would have neglected and killed it, eventually. Her little sister loved dogs.

Beth takes out the rest of the Christmas print Press-n-Seal wrap and begins her work. She wraps up the food tightly so nothing would escape if it jostled too much. That would be quite the mess, and nasty. She gags a little, takes a deep breath, and finishes her work.

As she waits for her little sister to arrive, she drifts into the memories of her living in Dearborn Heights with her sister, then moving to Cincinnati alone, next to Indianapolis again, alone. Now she’s back in Michigan. Her married sister lives in Palm Beach Gardens, and in a few years, Saudi Arabia, then it will be India. Beth laughs as she imagines her victory and what’s coming.

The next day Lindsey gets home and opens the bag of dog food to feed the dog. Her hand hits a hard object. She knows immediately. She grabs it and unravels the wrap from the old can. Stained white label. Faded black chunky lettering. No date to be found on the “nonperishable” food. Bulging ends. Even though you can hear the sloshing of liquid when you shake the can, the air-tight seal had long been broken and nothing seems to have escaped. A treasure only among sisters. A last-place trophy. If you were in possession, you lose.

Beth got the text at 21:02. “Nice.”
