I think we’re too quick to dismiss the spirit behind this sort of advice.

Eh, I think what you’re talking about is creating savings/debt paydown goals and budgeting. That’s never what these pieces are about because they want to make it sound like there’s an easy fix. Basically “stop doing a small thing!” which is much easier sounding than “actively do these other things!” It’s just like dieting, we all want to find out one thing we can take or eat/not eat and magically be skinny but that’s not realistic and requires its own kind of “budgeting” but that’s not really news.
