It’s OK to write what people want to read.

Thanks for writing this response to the mansplainer. God bless his heart, as they say in the South. He’s right in a way. Sometimes writing is for pure passionate expression and purely an exercise in itself, artistically or otherwise. But it sure doesn’t have to be only that all of the time. One might also say that one should write software, as he does, for the passion of it and not worry about material rewards or audiences for the work; but it sure doesn’t have to be like that all the time, and sure isn’t. It’s a pretty common phenomenon that women are told that creative work or other work that women do should be done for “love” or “passion.”
