Phil Knight is an American billionaire and co-founder of Nike. He was born in 1938 in Portland, Oregon. Knight attended the University of Oregon, where he was a member of the track team and graduated in 1959 with a business degree. After graduation, he served on active duty in the U.S. Army for one year then attended Stanford Business School, where he earned his MBA in 1962.

Following his MBA, Knight took a trip around the world. In Japan, he convinced a shoe manufacturer to sign a deal for Knight to be their distributor in the United States. During the year it took for the shoes to make it to the United States, Knight took a job as an accountant. Once the shoes finally made it to Knight, he began selling them at local track meets. This company was first named “Blue Ribbon Sports” until the name change to Nike in 1971.

Today, Nike does $37 billion in revenue, and Phil Knight is worth $46 billion.
