Kitchen Appliance Friends

My mind essentially exists in a constant state of smashing multiple ideas into each other and observing the fallout. Given the fact that food and friends are two frequent topics in my thoughts, it was inevitable that I would combine them in the context of kitchen appliances.

I pondered over the course of a commute and found that I had a hard time answering the question of what kitchen appliance I would be. This in turn led to an unusual dinner discussion with my wife (one of far too many unfortunately for her…) that ultimately led to the conclusion that you could, at least at a superficial level, determine what kitchen appliances correspond to people’s personalities.

Here are some examples:

  • Myself (according to my wife) — mini convection/toaster oven — based on hybrid of other existing appliances (extra/introversion), slow but noticeable change (in terms of relationships) and fairly uncommon (hipster?)
  • Wife mixer — works quickly (makes friends easily), combines many ingredients into single solution (able to get along with anyone), useful for making a variety of baked goods you can share with others (loves hosting and planning events)
  • Friend #1 — oven — takes a long time to warm up (relationships) but everyone uses one (universally likable)
  • Friend #2 — refrigerator — if you don’t have one, you need one (they’re just that great), you get out of it what you put into it (casual relationships are possible, but a deeper relationship is proportionally rewarding)
  • Friend #3 — bread maker — most people don’t think they need it and wouldn’t use it, but those that do, use it to its full extent (off the beaten path but in a fascinating way), only need one since it’ll last you forever (loyal, intentional and unique)

Take a shot at it and see where you and your friends/family on this scale.

On a separate note, if you’re hiring, try using this as an icebreaker interview question.
