In the state of Pennsylvania, Rep Rick Saccone recently introduced a bill that would allow for the use of semi-automatic rifles for deer hunting in the state. Saccone’s argument is that 48 other states allow it, they offer a better chance at getting a deer, and finally there is nothing “frightening or extreme in this proposal.” The hunters that are on the side of Rep. Rick Saccone believe that they have few options than hunters in other states and they demand the same rights. However, it is important for those hunters to note that they are not the only ones out in the woods who have rights. There are other hunters in the woods and many other people. Families who hunt together may be at risk if a fellow hunter misfires a rifle that is meant for warfare and police work. A semiautomatic firearm is simply too much for hunting game and puts many people at a far greater risk than what it’s worth, considering the drastic and unfortunate consequences that may occur. While there are some hunters that would like to have the semiautomatic weapons to keep up with other states, there are many hunters who would not like to see these weapons in the woods or to risk getting shot by these weapons. Rep. Saccone noted that there is nothing ‘frightening or extreme,” however having semiautomatic bullets fly at you while you are in the woods is pretty extreme and extremely frightening. Pennsylvania already has an excellent safety record for hunters and it is Rep. Saccone’s job to continue to keep up that record and keep the people of this great state safe. Loosening the safety standards for a state that is already relatively safe and working well is irresponsible and inexcusable. Part of hunting deer and other game is ethical marksmanship, but pounding a deer full of lead is neither ethical nor good sport.
